If you’ve spent time exploring TopShelfNutra, you’ve probably come across some ingredients that made you curious.

Pink Fijian ginger. Fijian turmeric. Muscadine seeds and skins.

Perhaps you recognized the name but wondered why we offer it. Perhaps you’ve used ginger or turmeric in your kitchen and wanted to understand how a supplement fits into the picture. Or perhaps muscadine was entirely new to you.

Those are the conversations we want to have.

At TopShelfNutra, we invite you to get to know the ingredients behind the products you bring into your home. A good place to begin is with a simple habit:

Nutrition you recognize. A closer look starts with the ingredients.

Every ingredient deserves a closer look

Our product collection gives us plenty to talk about. We’ll use this series to explore ingredients such as Fijian ginger, Fijian turmeric, and muscadine, one at a time.

We’ll ask the questions you might ask across the kitchen table: What is it? Which part of the plant is used? What has been studied? And what should I understand before choosing a product?

You shouldn’t have to become an ingredient expert to follow the conversation. Our goal is to make the information useful and understandable, so you can connect what’s on the label with the questions that matter to you.

A familiar name can be the beginning of a new question

Take turmeric. If you’ve been reading about it, you’ve likely also encountered the word “curcumin.” Seeing both names is a reason to look more closely at the product label and the research being discussed. What exactly is in the product? What exactly did the researchers study?

Or consider muscadine. Within the TopShelfNutra collection, you’ll encounter muscadine seeds and skins, as well as RENU Muscadine Seed Oil. Those descriptions give you different starting points for learning about the ingredients.

This is why the full ingredient description matters. For botanical supplements, the label identifies the part of the plant used. You may also see a preparation described as a powder, extract, or oil. 1

As we explore these ingredients together, we’ll pay attention to those details. They help us keep the conversation specific.

Get to know your own TopShelfNutra label

Pick up a TopShelfNutra product you already use—or open the label information for one you’re considering. Begin with three questions.

What is one serving?

Check whether it’s one capsule, multiple capsules, or a measured amount of powder or liquid. The amounts on the Supplement Facts panel are listed per serving, so that detail matters when comparing products. 2

What ingredients and amounts are listed?

Read the full names and the amounts provided. If the product includes a proprietary blend, the label may give a total blend weight without listing each ingredient’s individual amount. 2 Make a note of anything you’d like us to explain.

What else is in the formula?

Read the “Other Ingredients” section, along with the directions and warnings. This section may identify capsule materials, flavorings, and other formulation ingredients outside the Supplement Facts panel. 1, 2

You can bring us a straightforward question: “I’m looking at this label. Can you help me understand it?” That’s a useful place to start.

Let’s talk about the research, too

Ingredient education should include what we know and where questions remain.

In this series, we’ll distinguish research on an ingredient from research on a finished product. We’ll also look at whether a study involved people, which preparation was used, and what the findings actually support.

NIH notes that some supplement uses have established evidence, while others need more study. 3 We want our conversations about TopShelfNutra ingredients to reflect those differences, with explanations you can understand and sources you can explore.

Part of the TopShelfNutra community

Our co-op gives us a shared interest in understanding the products we choose. Your questions can help shape this series.

If you’re curious about Fijian ginger, want to understand the different muscadine ingredients, or have a question about a label, tell us. Chances are another member has wondered about it, too.

As you build your routine, keep supplements alongside everyday habits such as varied meals, movement, and sleep. Supplements should not replace a varied diet or prescribed medicines; check with your healthcare professional about your individual needs and possible medication interactions. 3

For today, start with one product and one question.
