Wakaya Island, Fiji—the island at the beginning of our ginger and turmeric story.

Before they become a powder or fill a capsule, our ginger and turmeric have a story rooted in a place: Wakaya Island, Fiji.

Surrounded by Pacific waters, Wakaya brings together a tropical climate, natural rainfall, and soil shaped by its volcanic origins. For TopShelfNutra, that setting is part of knowing the ingredients we share with you.

A story that begins in the jungle

Our sourcing history traces Organic Pink Fijian Ginger and Organic Fijian Turmeric to roots found growing in the island’s remote jungles. From those beginnings came an effort to cultivate these plants with care and bring them to people beyond Fiji’s shores.

The ginger became known through Wakaya Perfection as Organic Pink Fijian Ginger. Alongside it grew Fijian turmeric, recognizable by the rich golden-orange color inside its freshly cut roots.

These two ingredients share an island origin. They also share a story of growing together.

Two roots, growing side by side

Historical Wakaya accounts describe ginger and turmeric cultivated alongside one another in volcanic soil, nourished by natural rainfall and sunshine. A contemporary report from 2015 describes neighboring crops in sloping paddocks, with growing areas rotated to give the soil time to recover.

It is a detail that makes their story tangible: two familiar ingredients growing close together, with attention given to the land that supports them.

A harvest that begins
with human hands

Planting, tending, and harvesting connect the growers to the crops throughout their development. Wakaya’s historical cultivation accounts repeatedly emphasize this work by hand.

Behind the ingredients are people: the hands that plant, the attention given to the growing crops, and the work of gathering the roots at harvest.

That human connection belongs in the story just as much as the island itself.

From green leaves to golden roots

Above ground, turmeric grows in leafy green plants. At harvest, the familiar ingredient emerges from beneath the soil. Cut into a fresh rhizome—the underground stem commonly called the root—and its vivid orange interior comes into view.

The photographs bring that journey closer: plants beneath the trees, freshly gathered roots, and the color that will eventually become a fine golden powder.

Carefully prepared. Brought to you.

After harvesting, the ginger and turmeric are carefully dried and ground into powders. That preparation makes it possible to bring their distinctive character into kitchens and daily routines far from Wakaya.

Wakaya Perfection helped introduce these island-grown ingredients to a wider audience. TopShelfNutra continues that connection by importing our Organic Pink Fijian Ginger and Organic Fijian Turmeric from Wakaya Island for use in our products.
